Review by Michael Russert, Long Island, NY, New York State Veteran Oral History Program, Civil War News, 2012:
Avery's Battlefield, book one, is a well-written story about a fourteen year-old Quaker boy's adventures in 1861-1862. Avery and his dog have a series of adventures in what would become the state of West Virginia.
Deanna K. Klingel's narrative is fast-paced and riveting. The main characters are believable and the storyline is told in an entertaining style. Avery is transformed into a young man by his experiences during his travels into the war zone around Washington.
Published by Journey Forth Publishing for young adults, this is the first of a two-book series. The book has Christian overtones that are not overpowering and are successfully woven into the narrative.
